Emission-free survey on the canals of The Hague (Deep Green)

Project summary

The Municipality of The Hague carries out maintenance work in all canals and waterways in and around the city. To do this, it is important to know the condition and depth of the canal bed. To gain this insight in a CO2-neutral way, the Municipality of The Hague enlisted Deep Green. Using a multibeam echosounder, we mapped the depths of the canals and waterways—from the historic city center to the Verbindingskanaal. And all of this was done completely emission-free!

VARIOUS VESSELS FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS

To conduct the survey, we used three vessels. Most of the canals could be scanned from our newest electric vessel the Deep Green Purple. But, typical for the Dutch canals, are the bridges. And the Green Purple could not pass under every bridge. To collect data under the low bridges, we used the Deep Lotus, our electric USV, in combination with the aluminum vessel Deep Metal.

Since we were working with three vessels, each of which had to be deployed at different times, careful planning was essential. After all, every section of the canals had to be mapped, so we could link the data together.

THE INS MOTION SENSOR

In addition to posing a challenge for the vessels, the bridges also created difficulties in collecting the data itself: under the bridges, there was hardly any GPS signal. To overcome this, we used an INS (Inertial Navigation System) motion sensor, which allowed us to collect accurate data despite the lack of a GPS signal.

By using different vessels, techniques and solutions, we were able to deliver net-zero, high-quality green data on this project.
